GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH IN BAVARIA

-The information on these pages was provided by Bayerischer
Landesverein fuer Familienforschung e.V. und Bayerisches
Hauptstaatsarchiv, SGGS Foreign Correspondent Rainer Thumshirn
as instrumental in organizing and translating this material for publication. -

Earlier records:
For the 18th century and earlier times, important information might be found in
*Briefprotokolle or Notelbuecher*, which is the term for court records from the 16th century
onward. They contain Ehevertraege (marriage contracts), Hofuebergaben (transition of farm
ownership from father to son), Austrag (alimonies paid by the son to his parents after they
transferred farm ownership to him), Erbteilung (distribution of inheritances), Kaufvertraege (sales
contracts), Vormundschaften (guardianships), etc.
*Urbare, Salbuecher* (description of all lands and rights of a feudal landowner)
*Stift- und Gueltregister (registers of annual tithes of tenants)
*Lehenbuecher* (register of vassals)
*Steuerbuecher* (taxation records)
*Strafgerichtsprotokolle (records of criminal courts) and
*Zivilgerichtsakten* (records of civil courts)
*Kirchenrechnung* (bookkeeping records of loans and other payments by churches' charities)
*Stammrollen* (personnel files of the military from the 17th century onward)
*Bestallungs- und Besoldungsbuecher (personnel files of Royal Court and government employees)

WHERE TO FIND HELP:

Probably the most complete information can be found by visiting the Bavarian genealogical
society known as *Bayerischer Landesverein fuer Familienkunde e.V.*, Ludwigsstr. 14/I,
80539 Muenchen, Tel: 089/28638398 (Wednesday 11 am - 4 pm)
Here researchers may find assistance with general information. This organization also has a
card file of Bavarians who requested permission to emigrate between about 1820 und 1880.
However, this file contains fewer than half the names of persons who actually emigrated.

WHERE TO FIND THESE DOCUMENTS:

Quite often (but not always) documents contained in the local archives at the place of residence
of the person were included (as originals or duplicates) into the collections of the *Bayerisches
Staatsarchiv* (Bavarian State Archive) and are available to genealogists there. Usually an
application form must be filled out stating name and address as well as the purpose of the
research intended. Staff are available (however, not always English-speaking) to assist visitors to
find relevant documents.
The Bayerisches Staatsarchiv consists of a *Hauptstaatsarchiv* in Munich (central archive for
documents relating to Bavaria as a whole, presently containing approximately 25 miles of files)
and eight regional archives. Their addresses and telephone numbers, and opening hours follow:
